Monday, July 26, 2021 – Today we celebrate International Mangrove Ecosystem Conservation Day. Mangroves are an integral part of the San Juan Bay estuary habitats. They attract a wealth of biodiversity, serve as breeding grounds for fish and crustaceans, and are also home to species such as the fishing bat.
Mangrove forests also contribute to the protection of coastal communities. They form a natural barrier against storm surges and weather events. They also prevent beach erosion. This plant is capable of absorbing large amounts of carbon, thus helping to mitigate climate change and its effects.
