Weekly Estuary Update
Estuarine greetings! Tomorrow, Saturday, June 1st, is National Trails Day. Celebrate it in one of the green spaces of the Estuary Urban Forest Network! Whether it's on the boardwalk at Piñones State Forest, the trails at Doña Inés Park Arboretum, or that natural space near your home. There's also a self-guided trail in the Condado Lagoon Estuarine Nature Reserve, created by Eagle Scout Joaquín Pérez of Troop 25 in Bayamón, Puerto Rico Council of the Boy Scouts of America. It includes a catalog of the most common vegetation in the Reserve and information about it. Take advantage of the opportunity to see it during the Family Day Out!
Family day out at the County Lagoon Estuarine Nature Reserve
Celebrate Dad this Saturday, June 1st at the County Lagoon Estuarine Nature Reserve! Everyone is invited to the family day out. We will have the following activities:
- Kayak tour (specific terms apply) at 2:00 pm
- Sports activity for dad at 4:00 pm
- scavenger hunt (with Green Contact hours) at 5:00 pm
- Workshop on endemic birds (with Green Contact hours) at 6:00 pm

Following the workshop on endemic birds, Cine del Estuario presents: Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse; at 7:00 pm in Jaime Benítez Park at the Condado Lagoon Estuarine Nature Reserve. The film will be shown in Spanish with English subtitles. As always, this screening is free. Bring your blanket or chair!
Estuarine professional training workshops for educators
Sign up today! The San Juan Bay Estuary invites educators of all levels to participate in the 2024 Estuarine Professional Development Workshop Series. We will have the following workshops:
Green Estuary: Discovering the Biodiversity of Urban Forests; Saturday, June 1, 2024, from 9:00 am to 11:30 am
Blue Estuary: Coastal Ecosystems, Biodiversity and Water Quality ; Saturday, July 13, 2024, from 9:00 am to 11:30 am
Both workshops will be held at the Condado Lagoon Estuarine Nature Reserve. Concepts related to terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, their biodiversity, and conservation will be discussed.
A certificate of contact hours will be awarded to those who participate in the entirety of each workshop (2.5 hours). Register today at estuary.org/events.
Immerse yourself in the coral reef
In celebration of Coral Reef Week and World Oceans Day, the Estuary invites you to the workshop: Immerse yourself in the coral reef: biodiversity, conservation and resilience; with marine biologist Daritzel Cintrón and geographer Eliezer Nieves.
The workshop will take place on Saturday, June 8, 2024, from 9:00 am to 11:00 am at Jaime Benítez Park in the Condado Lagoon Estuarine Nature Reserve. Don't miss it!

Volunteers needed for recycling stations
The community campaign, "Don't Let It Touch the Ground or Reach the Water ," is seeking volunteers to staff the recycling stations at the Tito Matos Fest in Taller Comunidad La Goyco on Saturday, June 15, and Sunday, June 16. These hours will count toward the field trip requirement for the Microplastics Characterization and Reduction module of the Estuary Citizen Scientist Certification. Weekly bacteriological monitoring
Assessment conducted on Thursday, May 30, 2024. We have a RED flag for County Lagoon. We recommend avoiding areas that exceeded the water quality standard for enterococci, "Beach Action Value," of 70 CFU/100 ML. Have a good weekend.
