Family day out at the County Lagoon Estuarine Nature Reserve
On Saturday, March 2, 2024, join us for a cleanup at the lagoon (with Green Contact or community service hours), a yoga session, an interpretive tour, a talk about the lagoon's biodiversity, ecological trivia, and a screening of Estuary Cinema. Other activities
Last Saturday, February 17, 52 volunteers planted approximately 253 specimens of coastal vegetation on Piñones Beach in Loíza. In addition to the planting, they had a brief discussion about coastal reforestation as a method for restoring sand dunes and conducted water quality monitoring in the area.
As part of the microplastic characterization and reduction module of the Estuary's citizen scientist certification, several volunteers took a boat trip where they collected and identified microplastic samples taken from the Torrecilla and Los Corozos lagoons.
Thanks to citizen scientist Roberto Muñoz, the new manager of education and citizen science for the Estuary, Sahid Rosado, and Captain Freddy Bracero, who accompanied our aquatic waste manager, Cristina Ramírez, on this field trip.
Sewer assessment on Loíza Street
On Monday, February 26, our water waste manager, Cristina Ramirez, collected water samples from the storm sewer system on Loiza Street following a rainfall event. Sewers on Tito Matos, Las Palomas, Pomarrosa, and Kings Court Streets were also monitored. The results of these assessments are part of the " Keep It Off the Ground and Out of the Water" campaign , a community effort to reduce and responsibly manage solid waste and cooking oil.

Weekly bacteriological monitoring
Assessment conducted on Thursday, February 29, 2024. We have a GREEN flag for County Lagoon. However, we recommend avoiding areas that exceeded the water quality parameter for enterococci, "Beach Action Value," of 70 CFU/100 ml. Have a great weekend!
