Greetings from the estuary! Through our weekly update, we inform residents and friends of the communities in the San Juan Bay estuary watershed about events, projects, activities, and training opportunities.

The 2023 hurricane season begins

This week, a new hurricane season began. Estuary urges you to download the Community Hurricane Preparedness Guide and use their recommendations. The strength and resilience of your community begins in your home.

Also visit the Virtual Estuary Community Center, where you will find vital information, such as relevant emergency numbers and instructions for preparing emergency backpacks. Don't panic! Get ready.

Job opportunities

ACCOUNTANT – BIPARTISAN INFRASTRUCTURE ACT FUNDING

PARTICIPATION FACILITATOR – ILLEGAL DOWNLOAD DETECTION AND CORRECTION PROJECT

Estuary seeks to hire an intersectoral collaboration facilitator for the detection and correction of illegal discharges within the San Juan Bay Estuary and its watershed.

Family day out at the County Lagoon Estuarine Nature Reserve

Just one day left until the family day out at the Condado Lagoon Estuarine Nature Reserve! Join us on Saturday, June 3, 2023, starting at 9:00 am at Jaime Benítez Park. We'll have an illustration workshop, educational games, and a story time for the whole family.

Resident artist of the Estuary

A new season of resident artists at the Estuary begins. Join the artist Angelica Rivera and be part of making it happen Mural with a conscience; a project where you will learn about and how to illustrate the species that inhabit the Estuarine Nature Reserve of the County Lagoon.

The project consists of three workshops where you will create illustrations that will form part of a collaborative mural in Jaime Benítez Park. The workshop dates are listed below:

  • 3 of June - Botanical illustration: from observation to expression – with the botanist Mario García Quesada
  • 10 of June - Marine life and I – with the oceanographer and marine biologist, Dr. Jorge Bauzá
  • 24 of June - The elements, nature, and me

All workshops will be held in Jaime Benítez Park, from 9:00 am to 11:00 am. These are free of charge.

Estuary Cinema

El Saturday, June 3, 2023, after the family outing, Estuary Cinema presents: League of Super Pets; At 7:00 pm in Jaime Benítez Park at the Condado Lagoon Estuarine Nature Reserve. This event is free of charge. Bring your blanket or chair!

World Oceans Day

El Wednesday, June 7th, we celebrate the World Oceans Day. Join us for the virtual workshop: Oceanography and water quality in an urban estuary: stories and experiences in commemoration of World Oceans Day; From 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm via Zoom. Register today at https://estuario.org/eventos/.

Certification of scientific citizens

The following are the scheduled workshops and field trips:

Coastal resilience module:

  • 9 of June - Field trip: monitoring coral communities; from 8:00 am to 10:00 am at County Lagoon
  • 10 June – Field trip: mangrove planting; from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm at Crashboat Beach, Aguadilla
  • 14 June - Introduction to coastal resilience; virtual workshop via Zoom, from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm

Water quality module

  • 8 June – Field trip: bacteriological monitoring in Laguna del Condado and coastal area; from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm

Remember that we are certifying students in grades 9No. to 12mo through the coastal resilience module. Through certification, it is possible to complete your Green Contact hours or community service (public or private school).

We are looking for leaders for the recycling stations of the second Tito Matos Fest at Taller Comunidad La Goyco

The bell It should not touch the floor or reach the water and the Estuary Citizen Scientist Certification invites you to participate as a volunteer at the recycling stations of the second Tito Matos Fest, at Taller Comunidad La Goyco, Saturday, June 10 and Sunday, June 11, 2023. Choose your shift and register, here.

Support at recycling stations during the event will be validated as field experience for the Microplastics Characterization and Reduction Module of the Estuary Citizen Scientist Certification.

Tito Matos Fest is a commemoration of the life, work, music, art and community activism of Tito Matos, a great friend, collaborator and neighbor of the Estuary.

Weekly bacteriological monitoring

Assessment conducted on Thursday, June 1, 2023. We have a GREEN flag for the Condado Lagoon Estuarine Nature Reserve. We recommend avoiding areas that exceeded the water quality parameter for enterococci (70 CFU/100mL). Remember to avoid direct contact with the water during rain events.
