Through our weekly update, we share opportunities for collaboration, volunteering, and employment; through initiatives and planned actions that benefit the ecosystems and communities of the San Juan Bay estuary. These activities, tips, and information are for the benefit of everyone.
Allocation of funds for dredging the Martín Peña Channel
This week, the U.S. Congress announced the allocation of $163 million for dredging and channeling the Martín Peña Channel. The dredging will positively impact the water quality of the estuary's interconnected bodies of water, such as San José Lagoon, Los Corozos Lagoon, Blasina Lagoon, and San Juan Bay. Congratulations!
Citizen Scientist Certification
2022 brings new workshop cycles for the Estuary Citizen Scientist Certification. This year, thanks to the sponsorship of the Fundación Popular, we are launching the new Coastal Tropical Ecosystems Module. Don't miss this first round of introductory workshops for 2022, taking place during February via Zoom. The Water Quality, Participatory Bird Censuses , and Microplastic Identification and Characterization modules will also be offered. The deadline for submitting proposals has been extended — Estuary Resident Artists
We have extended the deadline for submitting proposals for this new edition to January 31, 2022. Don't miss the opportunity to be part of the fourth edition of Estuary Artists in Residence, a project focused on conservation through art and culture. Weekly water quality monitoring
Below are the results of the weekly bacteriological monitoring, carried out on Thursday, January 20, 2022. These results are also published on our social media channels.
We continue to have a green flag for the County Lagoon Estuarine Reserve. We have reported some areas with red flags, therefore, we recommend avoiding recreational use in those areas and being alert for precipitation events.
The restoration and water quality management efforts in the San Juan Bay estuary watershed are made possible by our supporters. Donations to the Estuary are tax-deductible in Puerto Rico and the United States.
