Weekly water quality monitoring

Book presentation Estuarine Voices
The Estuary invites you to the presentation of the book Estuarine Voices: Life Stories in the Communities that Make Up the San Juan Bay Estuary, on Tuesday, March 30, 2021, from 6:30-8:30 PM via Facebook Live.
The book presents accounts from residents of rural and urban areas of the Metropolitan Area of Puerto Rico, highlighting their collective and individual relationships with their natural resources and their struggles to defend them against unchecked urban development.
The book will be presented at a forum featuring its editor, historian Dr. Javier E. Laureano, its compiler, historian Dr. Ruth García Pantaleón, and contributors Sonya Canetti, director of the Projects Office of the Puerto Rican Foundation for the Humanities, and José Santiago Reillo, community leader from the Cantera Peninsula. The event will be moderated by Brenda Torres Barreto, executive director of the Estuary.

Earn your Public Health Merit Badge
Attention Boy Scouts and Youth – Estuary and the Guaitiao District of the Boy Scouts of America in Puerto Rico, in collaboration with the Graduate School of Public Health at the Medical Sciences Campus of the University of Puerto Rico, are offering workshops to earn the Public Health Merit Badge . These workshops will be held on Saturdays, April 10 and 17, 2021, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM , via the Zoom platform.

Asset identification workshops for the San Juan Bay Estuary Mitigation Plan
We are now recruiting collaborators to help identify assets (facilities, infrastructure, or value systems) in estuarine communities for the development of the San Juan Bay Estuary Multijurisdictional Mitigation Plan. Be part of this initiative.

The Citizen Scientist Certification Workshops were a complete success.
A total of 315 citizens participated in the first Estuary Citizen Scientist Certification Series , in the modules of Water Quality Monitoring, Participatory Bird Censuses and Characterization and Reduction of Microplastics.
We thank the 121 citizen scientists who participated last Wednesday, March 17, 2021 in the workshop Introduction to Microplastics and other aquatic debris, offered by Cristina Ramírez Colón, Coordinator of Alliances and Projects of Aquatic Debris of the Estuary.

Estuary Resident Artists 2021
We are pleased to introduce Zuleyka Alejandro and Juan Climent, the new Artists-in-Residence at the Estuary . Learn about their project, which aims to create a recycling center that also functions as a workshop for crafting artwork from diverted materials. As part of this project, a series of workshops on paper reuse will be held with the community. To learn more and watch the video the artists shared about this project, click HERE.
The Estuary participated in the CASA Forest Symposium
Today, Friday, March 19, 2021, the Estuary presented Participatory Bird Censuses: Citizen Science as a Strategy for Bird Conservation in the Ecosystems of the San Juan Bay Estuary at the Santa Ana Environmental Center (CASA) Forest Symposium, a virtual activity focused on environmental education, environmental interpretation, and research in forests and natural areas.
This coming Sunday, March 21st, we join in the celebration of International Day of Forests, proclaimed by the United Nations, whose objective is to raise awareness of the importance of caring for and preserving all forest areas of the planet and thus the survival of all species.

This coming Monday, March 22, 2021, we invite you to celebrate World Water Day . Be part of this effort to raise awareness about the importance of water, its proper management, and the conservation of this vital resource for life—pillars of our commitment and mission to the waters of the Estuary. Remember that every action counts in keeping our waterways clean.
