Estuarine greetings! Through our weekly update, we inform about events, projects, activities and training opportunities available to residents and friends of the communities of the San Juan Bay estuary watershed.

Certification for citizen scientists

Below are the upcoming events scheduled. Learn more and register at: estuario.org/ccc.

Coastal Resilience Module:

  • January 13 – Field trip: planting coastal vegetation and restoring dunes; with Coastal Resilience Coordinator Andreína Alexatos, from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in Loíza
  • January 20 – Field trip: planting of coastal vegetation; with Andreína Alexatos, from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in Arecibo
  • January 21 – Field Trip: ecological assessment of coral communities; with Coastal Resilience Coordinator Daritzel Cintrón, from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Playita del Condado
  • January 21 – Field Trip: ecological assessment of seagrasses; with Daritzel Cintron, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Condado Lagoon
  • January 24 – Field Trip: ecological assessment of coral communities; with Daritzel Cintrón, 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Playita del Condado
  • January 24 – Field Trip: ecological assessment of seagrasses; with Daritzel Cintron, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Condado Lagoon
  • January 27 – Field trip: planting of coastal vegetation and restoration of dunes; with Andreína Alexatos, from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in Loíza

Water Quality Module

  • January 18 – Introductory Workshop on Water Quality Monitoring; with Environmental Educator Coral Avilés, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. through Zoom

Microplastics Characterization and Reduction Module

  • January 25 – Workshop on Introduction to Microplastics and Other Aquatic Waste; with Coral Avilés, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. via Zoom
  • January 27 – Field trip: characterization of microplastics; with Aquatic Waste Manager Cristina Ramirez, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. (boat trip—location to be announced).

Christmas Trees Recycling

Recycle your Christmas tree! Below, we share dates and locations where you can take your tree, courtesy of the municipalities of San Juan and Guaynabo. Remember to remove all decorations.

Amigos de la Laguna meeting

Amigos de la Laguna is a community group that collaborates with the Municipality of San Juan, the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources of Puerto Rico and the San Juan Bay Estuary Partnership, in the restoration and management actions of the Condado Lagoon Natural Estuarine Reserve.

The next Amigos de la Laguna group meeting of will be on Wednesday, January 17, 2024, at 6:00 p.m. at Jaime Benítez Park, in Condado. This meeting is open to all stakeholders, neighbors, collaborators and friends of the Reserve.

More businesses adopt responsible waste management actions on Loíza Street

The campaign Que no toque el piso ni llegue al agua, in Loíza Street, recognizes the businesses: Sin Prisa, Pinkys, A Pie Café and Raíces, who have adopted new actions to reduce solid waste for the benefit of the waters that surround their community.   

These actions include educating the public, using filtered water, diverting and/or handling materials, using non-disposable or compostable materials, recycling cooking oil, and using eco-friendly cleaning products. We thank you for your commitment to our environment!

Cine del Estuario

Cine del Estuario presents: The Little Mermaid (2023); on Saturday, February 3, 2024, at 7:00 p.m. in the Jaime Benítez Park of the Condado Lagoon Natural Estuarine Reserve. The screening will be in Spanish, with English subtitles. This feature is free of cost. Bring your blanket or chair!

Culmination of the Gamaliel Pagán Hernández Christmas Bird Censuses

This Christmas season, the Estuario carried out its traditional Gamaliel Pagan Hernández Christmas Bird Censuses, from December 14, 2023, to January 5, 2024.

We wish to thank all the citizen scientists who joined us, as well as the managers, administrators, and entities that allowed us access to their natural areas.

Weekly water quality monitoring

Evaluation carried out on Thursday, January 11, 2024. We have a RED flag for the Condado Lagoon Natural Estuarine Reserve. We recommend avoiding the lagoon, as well as the coastal areas that exceeded the Beach Action Value water quality standard of 70 CFU/100 ML. Have a good weekend!
