FOCUS
Our Programs
We implement the Comprehensive Conservation Management Plan (CCMP) of the Estuario de la Bahía de San Juan through 11 programs based on science, education, art, and participation from the community. We invite you to explore your areas of interest and participate in our activities.
Community Resilience
The community resilience initiative of the Estuario de la Bahía de San Juan Program manages the quality of the water in a complete and comprehensive manner. The goal is to promote economic, cultural, and social development in the communities of the Estuario de la Bahía de San Juan without compromising the value of the ecological resources of the system and its services, and for the enjoyment of future generations. Learn about the three principles and eight actions that govern the program.
Estuario Resident Artists Program
At the San Juan Bay Estuary Program, we believe art is a fundamental strategy to develop knowledge through experience. Since 2019, Estuario has sponsored several projects by artists focused on the adaptation to climate change and the creation of blue economy. Through creative ways, we engage citizens in the process of achieving a resilient watershed.
Monitoring and Compliance
With the Identification and Detection of Illegal Discharge of the Estuary project we were able to precisely locate areas of high contamination at the sub-basin level in all the hydrographic basins of the estuary in order to fix these areas.
Certification for Citizen Scientists
Civic science creates and applies scientific methods through collaborative models between professional scientists and the general public. We invite you to participate in our activities.
Hazard Mitigation
Hazard mitigation is defined as the proactive measures taken to increase resilience and reduce or eliminate the long-term impact (loss of life and property) from natural and human-caused risks.
Volunteering
The Volunteer Program or Volunteer Network of the Estuario de la Bahía de San Juan Program collects, organizes, and coordinates opportunities for effective participation.
Wildlife and Habitat
The Estuario de la Bahía de San Juan system is highly diverse. Many of the actions of our Comprehensive Management Plan are for the improvement and maintenance of our varied flora and fauna, while promoting the recreational use of our resources.
Green Infrastructure
Green infrastructure studies and implements nature processes such as management measures of the natural resources– in this specific case, management of the water.
Aquatic Debris
Solid or liquid waste that flows into the rain sewage system flows directly into the water without receiving treatment. Detergents used to clean garages or mechanic shops are common contaminants. 80% of the waste found in our waters comes from actions taken on dry land. The remaining 20% comes from activities on the water such as cruises and other vessels. Learn how to dispose of waste correctly to protect our waters.
