Citizen Scientists Certification
The latest round of elective workshops is already underway for Estuario’s Citizen Scientists Certification Program. The first of the three modules’ workshop, Aquatic Birds of the Estuary’s Wetlands, took place on Wednesday, August 4 2021, and impacted 54 people.
Two workshops remain as part of this round:
- August 11, 2021 @3PM: Climate Change and Water Quality
- August 18, 2021 @3PM: Microplastics: Research in the Estuary’s Watershed

Cine del Estuario
This week, Cine del Estuario presents Aladdin (2019), at the Jaime Benítez Park of the Condado Lagoon Estuarine Reserve, Saturday August 7, 2021, at 7PM.
Estuario is following physical distancing protocols in accordance with government restrictions and CDC guidelines for the event. People can separate their space for the event at https://estuario.org/eventos/.
Water Quality Monitoring Day of Puerto Rico 2021
Estuario continues the registration and capacity building process of citizen scientists for the Water Quality Monitoring Day of Puerto Rico — the event will take place Saturday, August 28, 2021. As part of the process, workshops have been provided to guide teams and their leaders through the monitoring kit usage, data submittal, and protocols for the day. The next and last workshop will take place Tuesday, August 10 2021, at 3PM through Zoom. More information and registration is available at https://estuario.org/diademonitoreo/.
Estuario Resident Artists
Michelle Malley, the current Resident Artist for Estuario, has organized a Great Artisan Marathon as her last event with the community of Machuchal in Santurce. Through Saturday and Sunday, August 14-15 2021 (10AM-4PM), Michelle will hold a series of workshops focused on the transformation of used glass bottles into works of art and other utilitarian devices. The event is cost free and open for everyone. It will take place at Taller Comunidad La Goyco, the site of one of Estuario’s Resilient Community Hubs. To comply with physical distancing protocols, the public can separate their space by messaging Michelle through Facebook or Instagram.

Preparing for the Hurricane Season
We’re in the midst of the Atlantic hurricane season. As part of hazard mitigation efforts, Estuario is enacting a season-wide informative campaign, centered in the promotion of Estuario’s Virtual Resilent Community Hub. The hub continues to be updated with essential information to the public regarding preparation and hazard mitigation management.
