Monday, July 26, 2021 – Today we celebrate the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem. Mangroves are an integral part of the San Juan Bay estuary habitats. They attract a great deal of biodiversity, serving as breeding grounds for fish and crustaceans, and are also home to species such as the fishing bat.
Mangrove forests also contribute to the protection of coastal communities. They form a natural barrier against storm surges and weather events. They also prevent beach erosion. This plant is capable of absorbing large amounts of carbon, thus helping to mitigate climate change and its effects.
