Estuary Update

Greetings from the estuary! Through our weekly update, we inform residents and friends of the communities in the San Juan Bay estuary watershed about events, projects, activities, and training opportunities.

Certification of scientific citizens

Coastal resilience module: 

-       January 13 – Field trip: planting coastal vegetation and restoring dunes; with coastal resilience coordinator Andreína Alexatos, from 8:30 am to 11:30 am in Loíza 

-       January 20 – Field trip: planting coastal vegetation; with Andreína Alexatos, from 8:30 am to 11:30 am in Arecibo 

-       January 21 – Field trip: ecological assessment of coral communities; with coastal resilience coordinator Daritzel Cintrón, from 8:00 am to 11:00 am at Playita del Condado 

-       January 21 – Field trip: ecological assessment of seagrasses; with Daritzel Cintrón, from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the County Lagoon 

-       January 24 – Field trip: ecological assessment of coral communities; with Daritzel Cintrón, 8:00 am to 11:00 am at Playita del Condado 

-       January 24 – Field trip: ecological assessment of seagrasses; with Daritzel Cintrón, from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the County Lagoon 

-       January 27 – Field trip: planting coastal vegetation and restoring dunes; with Andreína Alexatos, from 8:30 am to 11:30 am in Loíza

Water quality module 

-       January 18 – Introductory workshop on water quality monitoring; with environmental educator Coral Avilés, from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm via Zoom 

Microplastics characterization and reduction module 

-       January 25 – Introductory workshop on microplastics and other aquatic debris; with Coral Avilés, from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm via Zoom 

-       January 27 – Field trip: microplastic characterization; with the Estuary's aquatic waste manager, Cristina Ramirez, from 9:00 am to 11:00 am (boat trip—location to be announced). 

Christmas tree recycling

Recycle your Christmas tree! Below are the dates and locations where you can take your tree, courtesy of the municipalities of San Juan and Guaynabo. Remember to remove all decorations, including the teardrop ornaments. 

Friends of the Lagoon Meeting

Amigos de la Laguna is a community group that collaborates with the Municipality of San Juan, the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources of Puerto Rico and the Estuary, in the restoration and management actions of the Condado Lagoon Estuarine Nature Reserve.

The next meeting of the Friends of the Lagoon will be on Wednesday, January 17, 2024, at 6:00 pm in Jaime Benítez Park, in Condado. This meeting is open to all agents, neighbors, collaborators and friends of the Reserve.

More businesses are adopting responsible waste management practices on Loíza Street

The bell It should not touch the floor or reach the water, on Loíza Street, recognizes the businesses: Leisurely,pinkiesA Pie Café y Rootswho have adopted new actions to reduce solid waste for the benefit of the waters surrounding the community. 

These actions include public education, use of filtered water, diversion and/or handling of materials, use of non-disposable or compostable materials, recycling of cooking oil, and use of eco-friendly cleaning products.

Estuary Cinema

Estuary Cinema presents: The Little Mermaid (2023); Saturday, February 3, 2024, at 7:00 pm at Jaime Benítez Park in the Condado Lagoon Estuarine Nature Reserve. The screening will be in Spanish with English subtitles. This screening is free. Bring your blanket or chair! 

Christmas bird censuses conclude. Gamaliel Pagán Hernández

This holiday season, the Estuary held the traditional Christmas bird censuses Gamaliel Pagan Hernandez, from December 14, 2023 to January 5, 2024.

We thank all the citizen scientists who accompanied us and the managers, administrators and entities that allowed us access to their natural areas.

Weekly bacteriological monitoring

Assessment conducted on Thursday, January 11, 2024. We have a RED flag for the County Lagoon Estuarine Nature Reserve. We recommend avoiding the lagoon, as well as coastal areas that exceeded the Beach Action Value water quality standard of 70 CFU/100 ML. Have a great weekend!
