Estuary Update
Through our weekly update, we share opportunities for collaboration, volunteering, and employment; through initiatives and planned actions that benefit the ecosystems and communities of the San Juan Bay estuary. These activities, tips, and information are for the benefit of everyone.
Red mangrove planting in County Lagoon
On February 8th, residents and visitors of Laguna del Condado planted red mangroves in the nature reserve. The activity was organized by the community as part of ongoing conservation efforts in the area. Its purpose was to highlight the importance of mangroves in this ecosystem and how the community can get involved in conservation efforts. Estuary provided support for this initiative. We applaud this initiative and the commitment of “Los Tsunamis,” the swimmers of Laguna del Condado!
World Wetlands Day
On Tuesday, February 2, 2022, we celebrated World Wetlands Day. This day marks the 51st anniversary of the Ramar Convention on Wetlands, signed in Ramar, Iran, in 1971. Wetlands provide important ecological services and help mitigate the effects of climate change. Learn more about these ecosystems and their importance to the San Juan Bay estuary.

Weekly water quality monitoring
The following are the results of the weekly bacteriological monitoring, carried out on Thursday, February 3, 2022. These results are also published on our social media channels.
We lifted Red flag for most areas of County Lagoon. This is due to elevated enterococci levels observed throughout the reserve. Rainfall events like those of the past few days promote the movement of contaminated runoff into water bodies. We recommend avoiding recreational use of the lagoon. Remember to be cautious when using natural waters for recreation after rainfall events.
The restoration and water quality management efforts in the San Juan Bay estuary watershed are made possible by our supporters. Donations to the Estuary are tax-deductible in Puerto Rico and the United States.
