Estuary Update
Through our weekly update, we share opportunities for collaboration, volunteering, and employment; through initiatives and planned actions that benefit the ecosystems and communities of the San Juan Bay estuary. These activities, tips, and information are for the benefit of everyone.
Estuary Summit 2022
The 2022 Estuary Summit was a resounding success! The event, organized by our Scientific and Technical Advisory Committee (STAC), drew over 30 participants. This gathering brought together a diverse group of experts on the Estuary who contributed knowledge and ideas from their respective disciplines, working towards the development of a conceptual model of the San Juan Bay Estuary's socio-ecological-technological system. This model will serve as a guide for creating conservation, research, water quality monitoring, and education programs.
Certification of scientific citizens
The round of introductory workshops for certification continues in the modules of water quality monitoring, microplastic characterization and reduction, participatory bird censuses and coastal resilience.

Citizen scientists get certified with coastal resilience module
Last Saturday, November 12, 22 volunteers received their certification in the Coastal Resilience Module of our Citizen Scientist Certification Project! Participants included Marine Science students from Inter-American University-Bayamón Campus and students from the Environmental Science Seminar at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus. We also had the support of the new Coastal Resilience Module coordinators: Andreína Alexatos (Green Infrastructure Coordinator) and Patria Aponte (Coastal Resilience Project Coordinator), who worked on mangrove planting and marine community monitoring, respectively.

Interpretive tour at the County Lagoon
The Estuary Education Team conducted an interpretive tour of the County Lagoon Estuarine Nature Reserve last Wednesday, November 16. Topics discussed included water, biodiversity, and people: how these socio-ecological connections within County Lagoon affect the reserve and what actions we can take to conserve it.

Weekly bacteriological monitoring
Assessment conducted on Thursday, November 17, 2022. We have a GREEN flag at the Condado Lagoon Estuarine Nature Reserve and surrounding beaches. However, we suggest caution at Station 5 (Aguadilla Street) in the Condado Lagoon. Finally, we recommend avoiding direct contact with bodies of water during the rain event and for at least 48 hours afterward.
