Estuary Update

Through our weekly update, we share opportunities for collaboration, volunteering, and employment; through initiatives and planned actions that benefit the ecosystems and communities of the San Juan Bay estuary. These activities, tips, and information are for the benefit of everyone.

Friends of the Lagoon Meeting

The community group Friends of the Lagoon will meet to discuss conservation actions for the County Lagoon Estuarine Reserve on Wednesday, March 23, 2022, at 6 PM. This group includes residents of the communities surrounding the lagoon, as well as citizens who enjoy this ecological resource.

Participatory bird census

To all our citizen scientists: Join us for the Participatory Estuarine Bird Census at Central Park in San Juan on Wednesday, March 23, 2022, at 7:00 AM. Space is limited. Reserve your spot at estuary.org/events/ . Stay tuned to our social media and weekly updates for upcoming dates. Remember to bring binoculars (if you have them), closed-toe shoes, comfortable clothing, and sun and rain protection. We look forward to seeing you there!

Community cinema in the Caño

Enjoy a family outing at the Community Cinema at Caño Martín Peña, featuring Raya and The Last Dragon; Saturday , March 26, 2022, at 7 PM at El Triángulo, Ave. Ponce de León, corner of Ave. Rexach (across from CVS and near the urban train station in Sagrado Corazón). This event is free of charge.

Participate in: Short Film Festival

The Transdisciplinary Institute for Social Action Research (ITIAS) at the University of Puerto Rico at Humacao invites university and high school students to participate in the Short Film Festival: Micro-Stories of Climate Change in Puerto Rico. Community meetings in Resilient Centers

Last week we successfully held Community Strategy Collaboration Meetings in the estuarine Resilient Hubs of the basin. We thank all the citizens who attended and fostered dialogue at these meetings.

Weekly Water Quality Monitoring

Results of the assessment conducted on Thursday, March 10, 2022. We continue to maintain a green flag status for the County Lagoon Estuarine Reserve. We have reported one area with a red flag, so we recommend avoiding recreational use in that area and being alert for precipitation events.
