Estuary Update

Through our weekly update, we share opportunities for collaboration, volunteering, and employment; through initiatives and planned actions that benefit the ecosystems and communities of the San Juan Bay estuary. These activities, tips, and information are for the benefit of everyone.

Educational talk: Microplastics in the Estuary Basin

Join us on Tuesday, April 19, 2022 to a pleasant educational chat in Public Cultural Space, in Santurce, 9AM-12PM. Estuario, CARICOOS, Sea Grant, and artist Manuel “gOnzo” González, among others, will be present, covering topics related to the ecological and economic value of our coastline's natural resources and coastal safety. The presentation by the Estuarine education team will be: Microplastics; characterization, reduction and educational efforts in the Estuary basin. This activity is part of the celebration of Earth Month at Pública.

Introduction to tropical coastal ecosystems

Estuary Cinema

This next Friday, April 22, 2022 in commemoration of Earth Day, Join us for a special screening of Estuary Cinema: featuring Frozen 2, at 7 PM at Jaime Benítez Park in the Condado Lagoon Estuarine Reserve. Bring your blanket or chair! This event is free. We hope to see you there.

Participatory bird censuses

Learn about the importance of birds and their role as indicators of the health of estuary ecosystems. Sign up for the upcoming participatory bird censuses. Sunday, April 24, 2022, in the Río Piedras Botanical Garden, and the Saturday, May 14 in the Piñones State Forest. Space for 20 people per census. Register today on our events portal.

Beyond Plastic

Environmental justice and the changes needed to achieve it begin in our communities. That's why we invite you to a training session covering the current state of the plastic waste crisis on the island, what you need to know to take action, the measures that have been taken from a public policy perspective, and the platform created by established stakeholders. This workshop is organized through a collaboration between Beyond Plastics, Syracuse University Center for Sustainable Materials, CAMBIO, Generación Circular, and Estuario. Don't miss it on two dates. Friday, May 13 and Saturday, May 14, 2022, from 10 AM to 12 PM. Both dates will have the same workshop.

  • Estuario will be present at the celebration of Earth Day in the Municipality of San Juan: Get active with the planet; el Friday, April 22, 2022 at the El Escambrón Spa, from 8 AM.
  • Join Ivangs Rivera, Coordinator of Water Quality Monitoring and Citizen Scientist Certification for the Estuary, who will be present at the EcoExploratorio exhibition: Resilience to Natural Threats, in the central atrium of Plaza Las Américas, on Friday, April 22, 2022, at 3 PM.

Weekly Water Quality Monitoring

Results of the evaluation carried out on Wednesday, April 13, 2022. We continue with green flag for the County Lagoon Estuarine Reserve. Even so, we must remain vigilant regarding precipitation events. Have a great weekend!
