APPROACH
Learn about our initiatives
We are implementing the Comprehensive Management and Conservation Plan for the San Juan Bay Estuary (Estuary Plan) through eleven initiatives grounded in science, education, art, and citizen participation. We invite you to explore them according to your area of interest and join our activities.
Aquatic waste
Waste or refuse—solid or liquid—is anything that is abandoned or improperly disposed of and reaches the marine, coastal, and riverine environment. This waste enters the storm sewer system, which carries it through pipes to bodies of water.
Certified as a scientific citizen
Citizen science produces and applies scientific knowledge through collaborative models between professional scientists and the general public. We invite you to join our activities.
Artist in Residence 2025: Antonio Martorell and his Friends
This year, the Estuary Artistic Residency invites us to embark on a journey of
collective creation, environmental memory and community transformation together with the teacher
Antonio Martorell and Friends. This is the seventh artist-in-residence for Estuario.
Strengthening of estuary coasts
ESTUARIO manages its action plan taking into account the water fiber of its watershed.
Green infrastructure
Green infrastructure is the system of natural or green spaces and bodies of water that support diverse species of flora and fauna; ensure the functioning of ecological processes; maintain water, air, and soil resources; and contribute to the health and quality of life of individuals and communities.” (Juncos Gautier, 2007, p. 10)
Education
Our estuarine education project provides meaningful experiences with the goal of creating appreciation for the natural and social ecosystems found in the San Juan Bay Estuary watershed.
Risk mitigation
Risk mitigation is the set of actions taken in advance to increase resilience, with the effect of reducing and eliminating in the long term the loss of life and property from natural hazards or those caused by human activity (anthropogenic).
Wildlife and habitat
The San Juan Bay Estuary system is highly diverse. Many of the actions in our Comprehensive Management Plan are aimed at improving and maintaining this diversity of flora and fauna, while also promoting the recreational use of its resources.
Monitoring and Compliance
With the project for the Identification and Detection of Illegal Discharges from the Estuary, we accurately located areas of high pollution at the sub-basin level throughout the entire watershed of the Estuary in order to correct them.
